The winners for the 2012 Diversity Visa Lottery were selected between May 2011 and September of 2011, when the statistics for the winners were announced.
These winners are not necessarily automatically granted a green card, rather they will have a chance to file for an immigration visa until the end of 2012.
Africa garnered a large number of wins for the DV-2012 and it is likely that Africans will be well represented in the issuance of green cards.
Here are some highlights of the winner selection:
- The country which received the highest number of wins in all of Africa was Nigeria with 6,024.
- The runners up were, in order, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya and Egypt. Together, these five countries took more than half of the total number of green cards won in the continent of Africa.
- Sao Tome and Principe and Swaziland garnered no wins whatsoever during this green card.
- Africa ended up receiving about half of the total number of Green Card Lottery wins in the entire world.
- Africa received 50,000 Green Card Lottery wins during this year.
